Looking Back

looking back photo aug.2015

Sometimes

when we have climbed

far and wide

above the valley of our life

and gotten drunk

on the gin of this thin air,

we gaze down longingly

at the clusters of houses

billowing woodsmoke,

the jeweled net of memories

strung like lights in the tree limbs,

the lean muscled bravado

of our own youth–

and we wonder how it is

that we can ever walk out

any of life’s doors

without running back

to the god of small things,

begging: please–

let me stay

just a little bit longer.

love this. thank you. feeling the pull of the past as Fall asks me to root down and land while part of me fights to hold on to summer. Literally and metaphorically.
